Star of the Seas Revealed as Second Giant Icon-Class Cruise Ship

What if I leave this ship without making any friends at all, despite my T-shirt? I am a social creature, and the prospect of seven days alone and apart is saddening. Wallace’s stateroom, at least, had a view of the ocean, a kind of cheap eternity. I also get reserved seating for a performance of The Wizard of Oz, an ice-skating tribute to the periodic table, and similar provocations. The very color of my Suite Sky SeaPass Card, an oceanic blue as opposed to the cloying royal purple of the standard non-Suite passenger, will soon provoke envy and admiration.

Royal Caribbean Begins Work on Next Icon-Class Ship

I believe in meeting people halfway, and so the day before flying down to Miami, I visited what remains of Little Italy to purchase a popular T-shirt that reads DADDY’S LITTLE MEATBALL across the breast in the colors of the Italian flag. My wife recommended that I bring one of my many T-shirts featuring Snoopy and the Peanuts gang, as all Americans love the beagle and his friends. But I naively thought that my meatball T-shirt would be more suitable for conversation-starting. This mall is the one that’s called Central Park, perhaps in homage to the Olmsted-designed bit of greenery in the middle of my hometown. Although on land I would be delighted to own a suite with Central Park views, here I am deeply depressed.

“You should hear all the whining in Guest Services,” her husband tells me. Apparently, the Pinnacles who are not also Suites like us are all trying to use their status to get into Coastal Kitchen, our elite restaurant. Even a Pinnacle needs to be a Suite to access this level of corned-beef hash. This is a large, multichandeliered room where I attended my safety training (I was shown how to put on a flotation vest; it is a very simple procedure). But the maître d’ politely refuses me entry in an English that seems to verge on another language. “I’m sorry, this is only for pendejos,” he seems to be saying.

Family rooms redefined

Maybe that’s why the Royal Caribbean newsletter slipped under my door tells me that “this isn’t a vacation day spent—it’s bragging rights earned.” Maybe that’s why I’m so lonely. In my white robe, I am a stately presence, a refugee from a better limited series, a one-man crossover episode. (Only Suites are granted these robes to begin with.) Today, I will try many of the activities these ships have on offer to provide their clientele with a sense of never-ceasing motion.

The Pearl, on the other hand, offers a remarkable multi-sensory walkway situated along the Royal Promenade. Brimming with sensational firsts, Icon of the Seas enhances the already extraordinary features of the Oasis Class ships, providing an unforgettable onboard experience for the whole family to cherish. Royal Caribbean’s next ship, along with a third in the Icon Class, will join Icon in introducing a new era of vacations for years to come.

It is not uncommon for cruise lines to make tweaks to the ship's designs for later incarnations in any given class. Star of the Seas will be Royal Caribbean’s third ship powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG), following Icon of the Seas and Utopia of the Seas. It will have other environmental protections and safeguards onboard. The cruise line also narrowed down the launch of the second Icon-class ship to the summer of 2025. Previously, Royal Caribbean had only revealed the ship would debut sometime in 2025.

He has dreams, as an artist and a performer, but they are limited in scope. One day he wants to dress up as a piece of bacon for the morning shift. Today the ship docks at Royal Caribbean’s own Bahamian island, the Perfect Day at CocoCay. (This appears to be the actual name of the island.) A comedian at the nightclub opined on what his perfect day at CocoCay would look like—receiving oral sex while learning that his ex-wife had been killed in a car crash (big laughter).

During this phase, there was no such thing as "impossible" — every idea was carefully considered and went into shaping the vision behind the world's first Icon Class cruise ship. Royal Caribbean has said it will debut its first Icon-class ship, the Icon of the Seas, in January 2024. The Icon Class might represent their commitment to offering unparalleled experiences, ensuring they remain at the industry’s forefront. Instead, it could be a strategic move to rejuvenate the brand, making it resonate with both newcomers and the cruise line’s loyalists. Even crew quarters have been improved, ensuring restful nights for all onboard. Sunlight floods many areas, such as the Royal Promenade, Central Park, and the SkyDome, which features glass panels for an inviting atmosphere. However, it’s essential to note that the large scale of these ships can make finding uncrowded areas challenging, and they may not be ideal for those seeking peace and solitude.

However, Crown & Anchor loyalty members can look out for special access on Monday, October 24. Following just 11 months after the steel-cutting ceremony of sister ship Star of the Seas on February 14, 2023, the second Icon-class vessel, Icon III‘s steel cutting, is a testament to how fast progression is in the shipbuilding industry. The steel-cutting ceremony is a traditional event in shipbuilding. It involves cutting the first piece of steel, symbolizing the transition from design to physical creation.

Icon will have advanced waste heat recovery systems that repurpose heat to be used as energy across the ship. The Pearl is the centerpiece of the Royal Promenade and is what you'll see when you walk onto the ship. It's part of the arrival moment passengers have when they walk onboard the ship. The casino on Icon of the Seas will feature more televisions so you can watch sports at the same time. Royal Caribbean has introduced new kinds of cruise cabins for the first time ever with the launch of Icon of the Seas.

Debuting in fall 2023, Icon will be the cruise line’s first of three ships to be powered by LNG (liquefied natural gas). LNG and the state-of-the-art ship’s additional environmentally friendly applications, such as shore power connection, will boost energy efficiencies and reduce carbon footprint. More details about Icon’s advanced environmental technologies will be revealed at a future date. From our tours of Icon of the Seas, it's clear Royal Caribbean continues to perfect its family-friendly ships with their Icon-class.
